Welcome to the Kvarner Region, the comfortable climate region where you can enjoy nature and culture, and much more, all year-round – Croatia’s best kept secret!

Irena-Persic-Zivadinov It is a great pleasure to be your hosts during the 81 SKÅL International World Congress in Kvarner Region – in Rijeka, European Capital of Culture and Opatija, the Cradle of Croatian tourism. The Kvarner region offers the unique combination of a stunning coast, islands and inland highland area plus an excellent geographical location. These features were described by the ancient Romans in the name Qu(te)rnarius, which implied the meeting point of the four places where various traditions and cultures came together.

Today, Kvarner is the tourism brand name for the County of Primorje-Gorski kotar and encompasses the coastal areas of Opatija, Rijeka, Crikvenica and the islands of Krk, Rab, Cres and Lošinj alongside the mountainous hinterland. This is the region where Croatian tourism started as early as the 19th century with the opening of the Grand Hotel Kvarner in Opatija which was the first hotel on the eastern Adriatic Sea.

The facilities in our region are extensive and of high quality: we have beautiful 5* hotels in many styles from boutique and eclectic to grand elegance. A wide range of luxury yachts, sailing boats and motor boats is available for visitors, there are stylish villas, both in the countryside and on the coast, surrounded by pristine natural environment. As a result of so much choice, the Kvarner region is acknowledged as a well established and worthy tourist destination.

Diversity is beautiful is the motto of the region, and it stands for a wealth of distinct locations which are offered to our visitors - lovers of the great outdoors - and are regularly praised. The coast, the islands and the mountains provide for a variety and a great experience of nature – from walking, hiking and cycling to playing tennis, swimming in the sea, enjoyable daytrips, historical sightseeing tours and cultural events. In addition, Kvarner Region boasts a particularly beneficial climate – simply breathing the sea air, and the fragrances of aromatic plants and green forests will essentially invigorate the body and the mind. Kvarner Region, as a tourist destination, is also well known for its superb Mediterranean cuisine, excellent wine, natural and cultural heritage together with a long tradition of health tourism.

Due to the comfortable climate, the season for all sort of activities on the Kvarner Region does not stop even during the winter months.

So, during your stay in Opatija and Rijeka enjoy our excellent local food and wine, experience the beauty of one of Opatija’s most beautiful parks, acquaint yourself with the local history while you walk along the picturesque paths, do not forget to breath smile-emoji and I hope that you will see for yourself why our whole Kvarner region is also called “the vintage Mediterranean”.

I am sure we will, all together, have another productive SKÅL world congress. While doing business among friends, enjoy your stay, take back home wonderful memories to treasure...and visit again!

Yours sincerely,

Irena Peršić Živadinov, Ph.D.

Dearest Skalleagues,

due to the unimaginable circumstances of the public health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 81st Skal International World Congress in Kvarner Region – in Rijeka and Opatija, scheduled for 15 – 20 October 2020, is postponed until 2022. New term will be announced in due time.

The decision has been reached with great regret and sadness bearing in mind that the greatest wealth is health.

In the meantime we are struggling to overcome the everyday challenges, waiting for worldwide restrictions on international travel to be lifted.

Also, we are aware that tourism has always been a key for economic recovery and social benefits.

This leaves us with hope that tourism will lead the path which will make the sector and all of us stronger, as it was proven in times of past crises.

Please allow me to express my gratitude for the support given during the candidature process and reconfirmation of Kvarner Region as World congress host destination.

Please stay healthy and stay with us until we meet again.
